Loved the insightful information about Nazi Germany, but I’m afraid that you’re sorely mistaken if you think the media isn’t horribly dysfunctional right now (to put it lightly). The recent debacle with PewDiePie is only one example, and I’d advise you to look into the dishonesty of the media further if you’re interested. It’s pretty sad that more people trust Trump than the media.

    1. admin says:

      Hi Matt,
I do think the media is terrible right now, but it’s not 1930s Germany terrible. It was a whole other level of nightmare back then. It really was. Resisters couldn’t hop on the web and find more legitimate sources. Propaganda was quite literally the only thing they could access.

  2. Brian Clark says:

Dan; you gave wonderful suck as always…thank you, I needed that (we all did)! I have another fancy pants word for you to work into the next podcast:

Erudite: (adjective) Characterized by great knowledge; learned or scholarly.

  5. Nemo says:

To your Star Wars question (how much more was this like Nazi Germany); Lucas intended for a great bit of the original trilogy to be heavily inspired by the trappings of that time of real history:

    * Han Solo’s/StormTrooper rifle is directly modeled after the Sterling MK-4 Rifle used in both World Wars
    * The Empire’s logo is, allegedly, an adulterated/stolen emblem of a religious group in the fictional mythos
    * The power relationship in the Galactic Empire between Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader is similar to that between Adolf Hitler and Reichsf├╝hrer SS Heinrich Himmler.
    * The overall look, specifically, of Darth Vader (and later Super StormTroopers in the Dark Forces PC Game series) was intended to directly resemble the look of the Schutzstaffel.

  6. Mary Zellner says:

  11. Alex says:

This was a great episode and I learned a lot during this one. I never liked how in school they sort of glossed over how Hitler came to power. Thanks for filling in the blanks. I was very interested considering I married a Jew and her great grandmother actually escaped from Germany during the 1930s. Now I see why.

    1. admin says:

Wow – that’s crazy about your wife’s great grandmother. Smart woman. These kind of regimes rarely take over quickly. The groundwork for their hateful agenda is usually laid out years in advance.

  12. Kerri Lynn says:

As you said, a lot of this rings bells of similarity to what is going on currently. What scares me most is that during your timeline when you spoke of basic civil rights taken away and laws that specifically targeted Jews, AND the part of Germans turning a blind eye to this happening because it didn’t affect them… all of this sounds so much like various incidents and laws being affected and talked about right now (i.e. the LGBTQ protection law being negated by our president) and so many americans just letting it happen. Another similarity— the purging of all political rivals sounds like a lighter version of the firing by the president of a number of public officials as of recent….. This all terrifies me so much. Thank you for this episode, I agree with your statement that Trump is not Hitler, but I think there are so many similarities going on in our current situation that it is important for people to keep all of these past events and incidents, including the small particulars, in mind.

  13. All American says:

What a shitty episode. Never listening agin.
